The O’neill Aotearoa Surf Film festival (ASFF) announces the return of surf films to the Crystal Palace Theatre after 20 year hiatus – this Thursday May 1st.
The historic Crystal Palace Theatre in Mt Eden, brought surf films to the big screen in New Zealand more than 50 years ago, including New Zealand’s most iconic film ‘Children of the Sun’, which showcased in 1964 to sold out shows.
The Aotearoa Surf Film Festival is an annual international surf film competition screening a selection of kiwi and international surf films, touring the surf towns and coastal communities of New Zealand for 5 weeks. Now coming into the final week of the festival tour, Auckland will be given the red carpet treatment. The Crystal Palace Theatre has been closed for almost 10 years and it has been over 20 years since surf films have been played in the cinema.
“I had driven past the Crystal Palace many times in the last few years and wondering if it was still running. I got in touch with the team behind the 48 Hour Film Festival and we managed to pull together this one night only event.” Said Festival Direct Nick Stevenson.
“There have been so many surf films shown here over the years and so many surfers who will have watched these films and been inspired to give surfing a go or just get pumped to get in the water. We hope that ASFF will have the same effect on a new generation of surfers, and to get the old guys back in the water. We are looking forward to sharing some surf nostalgia with the Auckland community”.
Two feature films and a selection of short films will be shown at the Crystal Palace, including DGZ’s very own 45 South.
