Rangi in Cali

Finless master and stoke enthusiast, Rangi Ormond, spend some quality time sliding some warm water waves in California with Jack Coleman. Here’s a little glimpse into some of the sessions they shared. Rangi is buttering up the wave faces with one of Derek Hynd’s elusive FFFF sleds prior to hopping on a thruster and displaying his versatility of shred.

Halves #9 / Tail to tip

It went something like this…two campers, an interesting mix of surfies from three different countries -Rangi Ormond (Whangamata, NZ) Jesse Steelman (California, USA) and Asher Pacey (Gold Coast, Australia). With three weeks on our hands the only plan was, not to have one, except to have as much fun as possible exploring the South Island of Aotearoa. We ended up checking out the West, East and South coasts as well as everywhere and everything in between, if it wasn’t for the ferry to Stewart Island, we would have driven there too. Somewhere along the way the journey morphed into ‘Tail to Tip’ and we decided it would be a good idea to then drive all the way to top of the North Island. Clocking up well over 4000ks on the road in three weeks. The following, as always, is a photographic diary of the good times shared in the water & on the road.

HEYWOOD | VHS

Some people aren’t cut out to be pros, they are either an artist or just too casual. Ryan Heywood is one of the most laid back and talented photographers you could hope to meet. His trademark B&W portraits and speed blurs are truly beautiful. Never far from quality waves and quality people, he moved from Torquay to Byron to immerse himself in the no-wave no-fin scene. Like a true artist he shoots when he feels it and not before. Prying photos out of him is hard but ask him what the maddest thing on the Russian version of YouTube is and you will be in for a very long download session! The guy is an expert, the madder the content the better. He needs a blog…or better yet log onto this Mixtape. / PMC

God – My Pal (1988)
This song is so cool. You hear it played around closing hours in every pub in Melbourne. It’s funny when a band wears their own merch, makes me think they’re either really into their own music, or they really just didn’t have anything else to wear.

Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s ‘Pedal Up” on Down Beat (1975)
Circular breathing makes for an amazing performance by Rahsaan Roland Kirk on Down Beat, hosted by Quincy Jones. I like the explanation of his talents and then the reveal of his appearance. SO COOL!

Rookie
I’ve watched this so many times, I’m still freaking out on it. Rookie is my favourite surfer at the moment. He’s incredibly creative and has so much flow, it’s harder than it looks. Photographing this doesn’t do it justice. You need to see the distance travelled, the speed, and more of the wave. It’s even more exhilarating when you see this shit go down in the water.

The Babe Rainbow – Love Forever
Ultra cool Northern Rivers guys make great music and are living in a fun happy world. Amazing live shows and good vibes guaranteed!

Holy Fuck – Red Lights
I saw this being played live a few years ago, and i liked it then and like it more now that the music video contains cats! on the internet!

The Fisherman’s Son / Ramón Navarro

The Fisherman’s Son, a new 30-minute film chronicling Ramón Navarro’s rise to the top of the big wave surfing world and his growing voice as an environmental activist.

When one of Chile’s most iconic surf spots and Navarro’s home break of Punta de Lobos came under the threat of commercial development, Ramón, the son of a subsistence fisherman, turned his platform as a surfer into a campaign to protect a place critical to his sport and near to his heart.

Patagonia produced and Chris Malloy directed The Fisherman’s Son, in association with Save The Waves. It’s available free to audiences around the world via YouTube and Vimeo – and it’s being distributed along with a call for individuals to take action and help Navarro protect Punta de Lobos forever by donating money to Save The Waves

With leadership from Navarro and support from Save The Waves, local Chileans have so far been effective at holding back the tide of development around Punta de Lobos that would transform the point – impacting surf culture, hurting the local fishing trade and devastating the environment. The area was declared a World Surfing Reserve in 2014.

But the area remains under serious threat. Crowd-sourced funds generated by the campaign go directly towards the development of a conservation master plan and foundation to protect the point, protecting both the traditional fishing culture and local marine biodiversity.

You can watch The Fisherman’s Son and donate to help the campaign here.

SOMEPLACE ELSE / full movie

Six strangers piled into a decommissioned transporter for seven days and seven nights, traveling dusty wastelands, surfing, skating, painting and jamming from dawn to dusk, meeting locals along the way, getting lost and experiencing the true heart and soul of Mexico.

It’s not here. It’s not there. It’s not even in between. It’s Someplace Else and it’s the new short film directed by Riley Blakeway.

Surfers Ozzie Wright and Dylan Graves, musician Hanni El Khatib, skateboarder Andrew Brophy and artists Jeff Canham and Rose Ashton – pulled together by Corona Extra for a bus trip down the forgotten back roads of the Mexican coast. The mission was to find the common threads that bind creative souls and surprise, surprise… it’s beer!
